It came as quite a shock to the footballing world when Robin Van Persie announced his intention to leave Arsenal last week. The club's talisman, and last season's Barclays Premier League top scorer, looked- from the outside- quite a happy man. But what convinced him to not sign a new contract? Will he stay at Arsenal? And if not, where will he re-settle?
After Arsenal's game at West Brom, it seemed hard to imagine the Dutchman would move. He was scoring for fun, and was also guaranteed Champions League football. But last week his intention to leave Arsenal, whom he had been at for 7 years, was announced. It was a huge shock to most, and the attention turned to his future. But will he stay in England?

| Van Persie has had a stellar season for Arsenal |
His main option in England seems to be Manchester City. The champions, despite scoring 93 goals, seemed to struggle with a lack of strikers. Mario Balotelli was banned for long periods, Carlos Tevez was AWOL, Edin Dzeko was misfiring, and Sergio Aguero was being stretched to his limits. RVP seems like the perfect candidate for the Blues. But despite all this, City seem a lot more interested in Edinson Cavani. The Napoli striker tore apart defences in the Serie A last year, and also scored 3 goals in 2 games against City in the Champions League. He seems to fit perfectly in Mancini's style of play. But Napoli, after letting Lavezzi go, seem much more unwilling to let the striker leave. Van Persie has also been linked with Chelsea and United, but not as strongly as City.
Another option is a move to Italy. The most obvious option seems to be a move to the champions over there, Juventus. Juventus went unbeaten last season, without a real stand-out world class striker. RVP would fit the boat perfectly over there. But again, there are a lot of drawbacks. He is aging quite a bit, and re-settling will be a big task for him.The biggest hindrance for a move over there will be the price. Italian football isn't in the best state financially, and RVP will cost a major amount of money. The move to Italy seems the much less likely out of his 2 major options.

| Could Van Persie join Samuel Eto'o at Anzhi? |
Another option is to go to a cash-stripped club like Anzhi or Shanghai. It won't do his career much good, but how hard is it to resist the large sums of money thrown at players nowadays? His final option is the most unlikely in my eyes, and it is to sign a new contract at Arsenal. It is what most Arsenal fans seem to want, and Arsene Wenger will not want to lose his main man. But is the mission already over for Arsene? Has his main star gone? The mission seems to have been lost, but I'm sure he will fight to the bitter end in his vain efforts to keep RVP.
Post your views at the bottom, Arsenal, City, Juventus fans, do you want RVP?
